The needs of the Korean War were such that existing vehicles had to be used, so the T42 was never produced as a standardized vehicle. The T42 hull had been made up of flat plates but the M46 hull was better ballistically. The T42 turret was put into production as it was such an advance that it was decided to produce a composite tank with this turret and to standardize it without going through the process of testing. The M46 hull and chassis was modified and the two were married. It entered production as the M47. Thus this tank was essentially an emergency vehicle created out of existing components but even with the short cuts taken, the vehicle never became available for use in Korea, the original intention. This was the vehicle issued to US Regular Army units in the United States and later to some National Guard units.
